She began studying ballet as a child in Glencoe, Illinois, and was dancing professionally at the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City by age 15. She returned to Chicago to attend college and continued to dance at the Music Theater in Highland Park. After college, her career flourished as she danced internationally. Grimm then returned to Highland Park after a decade of dancing with the New York City Ballet, the Ruth Page International Ballet, and the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. In 1972, she founded the Margot Grimmer American Dance Company of Highland Park and the Eric Braun-Margot Grimmer American Dance School soon after. The Company was successful with Chicago audiences, presenting nearly 100 ballets in the first eight years of its existence. Grimmer became well known for her commitment toward progressive ballets, choosing to choreograph multimedia presentations.
